Yajiro Kokeshi Doll Village is one of the place of origin of Kokeshi Dolls. The village is famous for its Yajiro Kokeshi Doll. Craftsmen from Yajiro Kokeshi Doll Village has won numerous prizes and award over the years at competitions such as the Japan National Kokeshi Doll Competition and etc. If you tread along the road leading to the north from Kamasaki Onsen leading to Yugawa, you will reach Yajiro Village, the hometown of Kokeshi Dolls. The village is located under the great Mt. Fubosan. Since ancient times, Yajiro Village has been running woodgrain business. Here, all kokeshi dolls are made by craftsman.
The “New Model” cute and gentle faces of the Kokeshi Dolls and the handmade craftsmanship displayed by the dolls captured the hearts of girls and young people and surreptitiously caused a boom. You will be enchanted by the adorable atmosphere and the culture of the place of origin of traditional Kokeshi Dolls. Yajiro area is close to Kamasaki Onsen. The people of the village work in the rice fields from spring to autumn. Between autumn and winter, the trees in the mountains are cut down to make Kokeshi Dolls. The “Yajiro Kokeshi Dolls” sold to hot spring visitors are connected deeply to the history of the hot spring in the mountain valleys. The double and triple rings on the head part depicted by the pottery wheel are adorable as if the Kokeshi Doll is wearing a beret. The Kokeshi Doll has bright colors on its abdomen part and has an innocent face like that of a child. On the 1st floor of “Yajiro Kokeshi Doll Village”, there is an exhibition room displaying the pictures and explanation of the history of Kokeshi Dolls. While on the 2nd floor, there is an exhibition sales store and a corner to experience colouring Kokeshi Dolls. In the square outside “Yajiro Kokeshi Doll Village” are Kokeshi Doll workshops. Here you get to experience the simple but warm atmosphere of the home of Kokeshi Dolls. At Shiroishi, on 3 ~ 5 May every year “Japan National Kokeshi Doll Competition” is held and many fans attend the competition.
