The Katakura Family Samurai Residence is a historical and old architecture of more than 260 years. In 1991 the main building, gates and moat were donated to Shiroishi city from the Koseki family. It is an interesting architecture, providing information that it started as farm house and gradually made up the appearance as Samurai Residence.
It is a house of the Koseki family, a retainer of the Katakura family, the lord of Shiroishi Castle. It is confirmed that it is the architecture built in 1730. In 1990, since the main building, gates, and moat were donated to Shiroishi City, it was restored to its original form. In 1993 it became a Miyagi prefecture designated cultural asset. The residence is built in a place surrounded by dense garden trees along the Sawabata River, north of Shiroishi Castle.
The Katakura Family Samurai Residence of Miyagi prefecture designated cultural property, is standing in the back street. It is along the Sawabata River, that is Sannnomaru Outer Moat in North of Shiroishi Castle. The middle class Samurai used to live in this area and today it is still a quiet residential area. This residence is drawn in the Shiroishi Castle Town Drawing Map as Koseki Uemon Shichi. Covered with gloomy garden trees, surrounded by clean water around the front, and sides, it is excellent in the landscape. It was completely restored on the occasion that the main building· gates · moat were donated from Koseki family to Shiroishi city in 1991.
