Koshido

In 1640, a tale of vengeance occurred in Shiroishi. The tale was retold through “Shiraishibanashi” at Kabuki or Japanese classical drama and since gained popularity with the people. This tale of vengeance revolves around two sisters, Miyagino and Shinobu. Shiga Danshichi, a Kenjutsu instructor, murdered the sisters’ father. In order to exact vengeance on Danshichi, the sisters turned to martial arts master, Yui Shousetsu. Under Yui Shousetsu, the sisters perfected their Kenjutsu and finally got their revenge. Koshido is the place where the Miyagino Shinobu sisters and their father are enshrined.

This tragic story was set in Kan-Ei Era. One day, Yotaro the peasant, together with his daughters were cutting grass here at Hachimaida. It so happened that Shiga Danshichi, a Kenjutsu instructor from Shiroishi Castle, who was passing by the area, caught mud on his Hakama attire. In rage, Danshichi cut down the father. The hearts of the two daughters of Yotaro, Miyagino and Shinobu, were lit on fire by vengeance. The sisters trained in the art of Kenjutsu and exacted their revenge for their father. This tragic story was recorded and turned into a play called “Gotaiheiiki Shiraishibanashi”. “Gotaiheiiki Shiraishibanashi” is featured in Joururi and Kabuki and became widely known.
The Hachimaida that has the reminiscence of the vestiges of olden days is still maintained nowadays by the people of Shiroishi. There is also remains of traces of “Hizaoribashi”, where Yotaro knelt while apologizing to Danshichi. Koushido was built during Taisho Era and is the place where the Miyagino Shinobu sisters and their father are enshrined.
